Trump stumping in Mon Valley
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will visit Monessen today.
The businessman and reality TV star will deliver a policy speech at 2:30 p.m. at Alumisource. Trump’s speech is titled “Declaring American Economic Independence.”
Recent polls have shown Trump running neck and neck in Pennsylvania with expected Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Monessen Mayor Lou Mavrakis said he asked Trump’s campaign manager in Pittsburgh three months ago for the candidate to consider a city visit because of the loss decades ago of more than 10,000 steel industry jobs there and in neighboring Donora.
“I don’t care if it’s a Democrat or Republican, getting someone in here to help the Valley is all I care about,” Mavrakis said Monday.
Mavrakis said Trump likely picked Alumisource because someone at the company has influence with the candidate.
He said the event is closed to the public and by invitation only.
He said city police will have assistance from police in neighboring communities in the event protesters show up during Trump’s visit.
Alumisource’s website says it provides raw materials to the aluminum industry “in the form of custom-shredded and blended aluminum scrap.”
The company has a 300,000-square-foot plant on Donner Avenue that was built in 1980.
