In light of a petition challenge, an East Washington Republican notified the Pennsylvania Department of State that he is withdrawing as a candidate in the 48th Legislative District, which includes Washington, Canonsburg and surrounding communities.

Jerome T. Cypher took the action Wednesday, the deadline to remove one’s name from the April 26 primary ballot.

Krista A. Keuper, through an attorney, challenged signatures on Cypher’s petitions in Commonwealth Court. The case was set for a pretrial conference March 11, in advance of a March 22 hearing in Pittsburgh.

Incumbent Brandon Neuman faces no opposition on the Democratic ballot, but a candidate can win a Republican nomination at the ballot box from write-in votes. The deadline for third-party and independent candidates to file for the Nov. 8 general election is Aug. 1.
