Sister to Sister summit in April
Girls who are sixth-graders in Washington County are invited to participate in the 16th annual Sister to Sister Summit of Washington County, scheduled April 1-2 at Citizens Library in Washington.
Part of an international series of Sister to Sister summits, this overnight conference is sponsored locally by the Washington branches of the American Association of University Women and Business and Professional Women and Outreach Teen and Family Services, with support from Citizens Library, Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Washington Hospital Teen Outreach.
At the summit, peer facilitator-led small-group discussions and a variety of other activities will address critical areas of concern such as dealing with peer pressure, decision-making, creating positive friendships, body image, bullying, personal safety and self-defense, and dating and relationships. Team-building activities, “purposeful fun,” refreshments and ample sleep time will round out the agenda.
Organizers are seeking young women in 10th and 11th grades who would like to serve as peer facilitators. There is a mandatory training session on March 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Citizens Library, and peer facilitators are required to arrive at the summit by 6 p.m. April 1 and stay until 11 a.m. April 2. Peer facilitators will receive up to 21 community service hours.
Prospective peer facilitators should contact summit co-coordinator Holly Sethman, Outreach Teen and Family Services, at 724-745-3350, ext. 264, or holly.sethman@chartiers-houstonsd.com by March 18, which is the deadline for peer facilitator registration.
Prospective participants should contact summit co-coordinator Kathy Sabol, AAUW-Washington, at katsabol@comcast.net or 724-225-6710.
The deadline for participants to register for the summit is March 28.
