MIDLAND (AP) – Police say the former commander of a Veterans of Foreign Wars club in Western Pennsylvania used the group’s credit card to steal more than $100,000.

Fifty-one-year-old Donald C. Smith of Midland faces more than 1,700 counts of three charges: illegally using a credit card, theft and receiving stolen property.

Police say Smith used the Midland VFW’s card 568 times between October 2012 and June 2014, racking up more than $103,000 in purchases.

Police say Smith used the card at gas stations, bought entertainment subscriptions to DirectTV and Xbox Live, and bought various items at video game stores, dollar stores and department stores.

Police say members came forward with their suspicions, which led to an audit that uncovered the alleged thefts.

Online court records don’t list a defense attorney for Smith.
