Man who attacked police gets court date
A South Fayette Township man accused of injuring a state trooper during a scuffle at The Meadows Casino in North Strabane Township last month waived his case to court Tuesday.
Shawn Charles Lamonde, 39, of 5907 Ashford Court, McDonald, is charged by state police with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest and harassment. He was set for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Jay Weller.
Trooper James Amitrone, a 21-year veteran, broke his right leg during the Feb. 28 scuffle. He was initially treated at Canonsburg Hospital and has since undergone surgery.
Amitrone and Trooper Jeff Trypus were working at the casino and called to one of the bars for a disturbance. While Trypus was talking with a man believed to be with Lamonde, the 39-year-old, who was holding a glass beer bottle in his hand, reportedly confronted the trooper and asked “Who … are you?” When Trypus identified himself as a trooper, Lamonde allegedly responded that he did not care.
Trypus told Lamonde he was under arrest and tried to take him into custody. Lamonde reportedly resisted efforts by the trooper. As Amitrone and Trypus were taking Lamonde to the floor, Lamonde reportedly continued to resist and Amitrone sustained the broken leg.
Lamonde remains free on $25,000 bond. He will be arraigned on the charges May 26.
