Peregrine falcon from Cathedral of Learning found dead
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A male peregrine falcon that nests on the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning has been found dead less than two miles from where its young mate was nurturing the couple’s first two eggs.
The bird was found in a yard on Wednesday. The state Game Commission is expected to perform a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
Bob Mulvihill, an ornithologist at the National Aviary, says it’s uncertain how the female, Hope, will handle the death. She laid her first eggs Sunday. He says the bird could abandon the eggs or stay and try to make it as a single mother.
Seven active peregrine nests are known to exist in the area.
