Historical society hosts dinner-dance
WAYNESBURG – History buffs across the county will put their dancing shoes on this weekend for Greene County Historical Society’s sixth annual dinner dance.
The banquet, from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday at National Guard Readiness Center in EverGreene Technology Park, will include dinner, dancing, a swing band, Chinese auction and raffles and will showcase what the society has planned for the coming year.
Alexandra Johnson, an administrative assistant for the society, said the event typically brings out between 100 and 200 people “to celebrate our sponsors and all of the people who have made the Historical Society successful for another year.”
“People enjoy seeing the board and the staff members and talking to them about what’s been going on with the museum,” said Johnson, who is the event’s organizer. “One of the things we’re most proud of is getting the work done on the exterior of the Croust School House, in Rogersville, over this past year. It’s going to be one of our satellite places.”
Johnson said this year the plan is to finish refurbishing the interior of the schoolhouse as well has do some renovations at the museum, 918 Rolling Meadows Road, Waynesburg, which has been around for 45 years.
The dancing this year will feature the Swingin’ Bopcats, a local 18-piece big band, which will play 1940’s music and perform throughout the evening.
The Thistlethwaite Vineyards, of Jefferson, will conduct wine tastings.
“The swing band isn’t something that people get to see every day and a winery just adds to the whole atmosphere,” Johnson said.
A display of artifacts will take visitors back to the Gilded Age, from 1870 to 1900, in Greene County, which will be a preview of the first main hall exhibit of the year.
Tickets for the event are $40 per person, with all proceeds going to the Historical Society. A full table can be reserved for parties of six or more.
