Firearms violation spurs arrest
A Washington man was arrested early Monday by city police, who said they found him with a gun while investigating a report of shots fired in the West End.
Joshua Jordan Fields, 23, of 486 Ewing St., was taken into custody in the 800 block of Catfish Alley after he allegedly ran when he spotted police.
Police were initially called to the 900 block of Addison Street about 12:45 a.m. for the report of a man shooting a gun. When officers checked the area, they saw a man matching the description of the one who fired the shots.
The man, later identified as Fields, ran north into a yard with a wooden fence.
Police said they saw him pull up his shirt and put his hands on the waistband of his pants. An officer got out of his cruiser and drew his weapon on Fields, who was behind a large water tank next to the fence.
Fields was given numerous orders to show his hands, but police say he refused. He then started walking toward police and was ordered to get on the ground. He reportedly got on the ground and started crawling toward officers, who took him into custody.
Police said a gun was found on the other side of the fence. The gun was dry, while everything around it was wet. There was one spent 9 mm casing in the chamber of the handgun. Police said Fields also had an empty magazine and four bullets in the pocket of his pants.
Fields was charged with person not to possess a firearm. He pleaded guilty in 2013 to robbery in connection with an October 2012 incident in the city. He was arraigned before District Judge James Ellis and released from Washington County jail after posting $2,500 bond.
Fields is scheduled for a May 16 preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
