Three Avella men were seriously injured Tuesday morning in a head-on crash in the 1900 block of Route 519 in North Strabane Township.

Township police said Joseph Spivak, 40, of Armbrust, Westmoreland County, was driving north about 7:42 a.m. when he crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. One motorist saw him coming and was able to steer clear, but a car driven by Jonathan Gzikowski, 35, was struck by Spivak’s sport utility vehicle. Gzikowski and back-seat passenger Jason Midler, 32, were taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Alex Siget, 48, who was a front-seat passenger in Gzikowski’s car, was taken to UPMC-Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh. The three were not wearing seat belts, police said.

Spivak was not injured.

Police are continuing their investigation into the crash.

Route 519 was closed for an hour. North Strabane firefighters assisted at the scene.
