WAYNESBURG – Three Greene County high school students were awarded full scholarships to Penn State’s Conservation Leadership School as part of the weeklong celebration of soil and water stewardship week.

The board of directors of Greene County Conservation District awarded the scholarships to the students based on essays they wrote explaining why they should be selected for the scholarships and how attending the school would benefit them in the future.

The students, Gabrielle Muilenburg of Mapletown High School and Ryan Swartz and Stephen Zacoi, both of Carmichaels Area High School, were awarded the scholarships at the conservation district’s monthly meeting April 26.

The scholarships were funded by Columbia Pipeline Group and by the conservation district. The leadership school will provide the students with a tremendous opportunity and an experience to remember for the rest of their lives.

The Conservation Leadership School is hosted by Penn State each year at Stone Valley Recreation Area in Petersburg. Students spend a week learning about the environment and their role as stewards through fun, hands-on activities and field trips. For more information about the school, visit the school’s website at www.ecosystems.psu.edu/youth/cls.
