Concerts cap year for Central Greene music programs

Music educators in Central Greene School District are showcasing their students’ work this month by presenting free concerts for the public.

In each musical performance, students are taking what they’ve learned in class and applying it to produce a quality concert.

The seventh- and eighth-grade choral concert was May 3 and the high school choral concert was Friday. Upcoming concerts include the sixth-grade choral concert at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School at 7 p.m. Thursday; Waynesburg Central Elementary band concert at the elementary school May 17 at 1 p.m.; and the instrumental concert at the high school May 19 at 7 p.m.

Throughout the year, some CGSD students were chosen through an application and audition process to represent their school and district at the following music honor events in the Western PA region They include: Emily Bennett and Alexis Mason, PMEA Elementary Sing Fest Festival; Jacob Phillips, Hannah Henry and Paige Hellems, PMEA Jr. High District Choir; Lily Behm, PMEA District Band; Brady Hogue, Jeromy Mackey and Braxton McCollum, PMEA District Choir; Brady Hogue and Braxton McCollum, PMEA Region Choir; and Brady Hogue, PMEA All State Choir.

Last month, instrumental students and marching band members traveled to Washington, D.C., to tour historical monuments and compete in concert band competitions as well as parade marching competitions. Margaret Bell Miller Middle School finished third in its class in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Firefighters parade, and Waynesburg Central High School also took third place in its class.

WCHS marching band won the President’s Award for second place over all of the bands. In addition, WCHS dancers and color guard won the Outstanding Auxiliary award over all of the bands. Both the MBM and WCHS concert bands earned a rating of “excellent” on their concert performances.
