The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission will hold a public hearing May 25 at the Washington County Courthouse to gather input on a rate increase request from Columbia Gas.

The hearing starts at 6 p.m. in public meeting room 103.

The proposed rate increase would raise monthly bills by 12.5 percent.

That would mean an average monthly heating bill of $77.33 would rise to $86.97.

The PUC voted in April to suspend the increase for up to seven months, and ruled a decision must be made by Dec. 19, 2016.

PUC administrators said those submitting comment should write out statements and bring multiple copies for the judge and court reporter. Parties also may question those who submit testimony.
