School district to consider placing armed guards in schools
MONROEVILLE (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania school district is poised to vote on a proposal that would place armed security guards in all of its schools.
The proposal calls for putting retired police officers in all seven Gateway School District schools in suburban Pittsburgh.
School Board member Mary Beth Cirucci presented the plan earlier this month. She tells the Tribune-Review the district hopes to vote on the policy by next month.
WTAE-TV reports 10 retired law enforcement officers would be hired under the plan. It would cost about $20,000 to $30,000 more than the current security budget of about $258,000.
Board President Chad Stubenbort says the plan is “what’s best for the district.”
The district must post the new policy for 30 days.
