Police confiscate drugs after chase
California police confiscated suspected heroin, crack and marijuana after taking a Brownsville man into custody following a vehicle pursuit in the borough early Friday.
Jordan Michael Mapstone, 23, of 335 Shelton Ave., reportedly fled from officers as they tried to stop him about 1 a.m. for driving with no lights on his vehicle on Fifth Street as he approached Wood Street.
The officer activated his emergency lights and siren, but the driver, later identified as Mapstone, continued. Police said he was weaving on the road and almost struck a marked cruiser.
Mapstone eventually stopped on the dead-end portion of Meadow Avenue. Police said he got out of his vehicle and ran toward a wooded area. Mapstone was quickly taken into custody.
Inside the vehicle, police said they found stamp bags of heroin, crack and marijuana. Police said Mapstone, who had $144 in a pants pocket, could not give officers the name of the person who owned the vehicle. California University of Pennsylvania police assisted borough police.
Mapstone, who police said appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance, was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital, where blood was drawn. Police said test results were not available Friday.
Mapstone was arraigned before District Judge Traci McDonald on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, flight to avoid apprehension, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, driving under the influence, possession of crack, heroin and marijuana and several traffic violations. He was placed in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for June 1 before District Judge Joshua Kanalis.
