A family of five was displaced when the attic of their home in Washington’s West End caught fire Tuesday morning.

Washington firefighters were called about 3:30 a.m. to the home of Shannon Lynn, 890 Broad St., where they found heavy smoke in the attic of the two-story home.

City fire Chief Linn Brookman said Lynn awoke and smelled smoke. She awakened two of her children, an 8-year-old boy and 10-year-girl, who were asleep in second-floor bedrooms and also got out her 12-year-old daughter, who was in the attic.

Lynn’s boyfriend also was in the house and able to get out safely.

City firefighters cleared the scene about 5 a.m. Brookman said there was moderate damage to the house owned by Gary Yeager of Mississippi.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family. The state police fire marshal will be at the scene later this week to determine the cause, Brookman said.
