WAYNESBURG – The first Flashlight Drag race of the year is scheduled to be held Sunday afternoon at Greene County Airport after the originally opening scheduled for last weekend was canceled because of weather.

Flashlight Drags, which refers back to the early days of drag racing when a flashlight was used to signal the start, consists of a 1/8-mile race along the airport runway.

The format is heads-up, meaning both vehicles leave the starting line at the same time.

Gates will open at noon with races scheduled to run from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is $6 to watch and $30 to race.

For the races, street-legal cars and trucks are eligible, and all drivers must have appropriate paperwork, including a valid driver’s license, current state registration and proof of insurance. Passengers are not allowed.

All racers must sign a waiver and attend a mandatory drivers’ meeting prior to the start of the event. There will be no refunds.

For drivers wishing to race convertible cars, the top must be up, or the driver is required to wear a helmet. Mufflers and PennDOT approved tires are required.

Four remaining races, weather permitting, will be held June 19, Aug. 21, Sept. 18 and Oct. 9.
