VFW auxiliary president to visit during weekend
The president of Veterans of Foreign Wars State Auxiliary will be in the area this weekend, visiting several posts and inducting new officers.
Karen Hoover of Halifax, who was elected at the VFW’s 91st Department Convention in June 2015, will be traveling around District 24, which covers both Washington and Greene counties.
Hoover will tour the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Cecil Township and the McMurray VFW Post 764 ambulance facility, the only VFW post-operated service in Pennsylvania, as well as other VFW posts in the area.
On Sunday, Hoover will be conduct an inspection and induction of the District 24 auxiliary officers for the 2016-2017 year.
As state president, Hoover’s role is to “supervise and make sure all the auxiliaries within the state function and do what they’re supposed to do, raise money for veterans and their families, and help and assist them in anything that they need,” said Patricia Gavazzi of Burgettstown, District 24 president.
In 1985, Hoover joined the Blaine G. Walkers Jr. Auxiliary 5507 under the eligibility of her father, Leon Savidge, a World War II Army veteran. In 1999, Hoover became a life member. Though currently the department president, Hoover has also been the auxiliary treasurer since 2000.
