County to honor veterans
Greene County Office of Veterans’ Affairs compiled a list of services for Memorial Day weekend, May 29 and 30.
• Brooks-Crago American Legion Post No. 816 of Rices Landing will hold a parade and services Sunday.
At 1:30 p.m., members will assemble for the parade at the post home in Rices Landing.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. at the post home and proceed to the honor roll between Hewitt Cemetery and Hewitt Presbyterian Church.
Participants include Jefferson-Morgan High School band, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Rices Landing and Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Department.
Rices Landing Mayor Ryan Belski will give the welcome. Scot Lippencott, commander of the American Legion’s 25th district, will be the speaker for the ceremony.
An honor guard and firing squad will attend, and readings of General John Logan’s orders and the poem “In Flanders Field” will be presented.
Invocation and benediction will be by Rev. Geoff Roch of Hewitt Presbyterian Church.
Following this service, another program will be held at Crucible/ St. Mary Cemetery Honor Roll.
The American Legion invites everyone to the post home following the service for a light snack provided by the auxiliary.
• James R. Maxon American Legion Post No. 992 of Mt. Morris also will hold services Sunday.
A services will be held at 11 a.m. at Kiger Cemetery and include an honor guard and firing squad.
At 11:20 a.m. a service will be held at Claughton Chapel Cemetery and include an honor guard and firing squad.
• Carmichaels Honor Guard, consisting of members of Carmichaels American Legion Post No. 400, Carmichaels VFW Post No. 3491 and Greensboro VFW Post No. 6303, will have services at the following locations Sunday:
At 11 a.m., a service will be held at Garards Fort Cemetery with state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, as speaker. There will be an honor guard and firing squad.
At noon, a service will be held at the Greensboro VFW Honor Roll with a salute and placement of the wreath to honor the deceased at the monument. An honor guard and firing squad will participate.
• Carmichaels Honor Guard, consisting of members of Carmichaels American Legion Post No. 400 and Carmichaels VFW Post No. 3491, will participate in the following services:
At 10 a.m., a service will be held at the Nemacolin Honor Roll.
At 11 a.m., a service will be held at the Crucible Honor Roll. Gary J. Block, treasurer of the American Legion Riders Chapter 816, will lead the pledge of allegiance.
Dalene Watson, the county’s veterans’ affairs director and U.S. Air Force retiree, and Robert W. Teagarden III, U.S. Army veteran, will be speakers. Chris Sheldon Sr. will sing the national anthem and the Rev. Frank Vucic of Sugar Grove Baptist Church will give the invocation and benediction.
At 1 p.m., a service will be held at Laurel Point Cemetery with state Sen. Camera Bartolotta, R-Carroll, as speaker. Frank Ricco and the American Legion Post Band will perform.
The invocation and benediction will be by the Rev. Reagan Fike of the First Christian Church of Carmichaels.
Lunch will be provided at 1:30 p.m. at the Carmichaels Legion Post No. 400 served by the ladies auxiliary.
• Waynesburg VFW Post No. 4793 will hold a service at 11 a.m. Monday at the post home on Lincoln Street with Terry Hoyle Jr. as the master of ceremonies.
The invocation and benediction will be by Zane W. Mitchell and the national anthem will be sung by Miranda Durbin.
Speaker will be retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Michael Belding. Durbin and Sandra Huffman will sing. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Troop 1280 and Girl Scouts of Greene County will participate.
The VFW post invites everyone to the post home following the service. The auxiliary will provide a light lunch.
• Filer-Sadlek Post No. 954 of Jefferson will hold services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mather Honor Roll and post office.
The speaker will be the Rev. Jim Lewis of Fordyce and Mt. Pleasant Methodist churches. The service will include a salute to the deceased and placement of the wreath at the honor roll.
At 11:30 a.m., the post will visit Jefferson Cemetery with a salute to the deceased and placement of a wreath at the honor roll. There will be an honor guard and a firing squad.
At noon, the post will hold a service at the veterans’ section of the Greene County Memorial Park, with a salute to the deceased and placement of a wreath at the base of the American flag. An honor guard and a firing squad will participate.
• James R. Maxon American Legion Post No. 992 of Mt. Morris will have services at 10 a.m. at Mt. Morris United Methodist Church.
At 11 a.m., a parade will be held from the church to Dunkard Creek, where there will be a salute to the deceased and the throwing of a flower into the creek in memory of those who died serving in the U.S. Navy.
At noon, the post will hold a ceremony at Cedar Grove Cemetery. The speaker will be Milford Watters, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and associate minister of Mt. Morris Gospel Tabernacle Church.
The ceremony will be followed by the placement of a wreath in honor of the deceased at the monument, with an honor guard and firing squad.
