Police: Elderly pair in hospital after failed suicide pact
An elderly couple was hospitalized after an apparent suicide pact failed, Rostraver police said.
Edward Paul Friday, 80, and his wife, Wilma Jean Friday, 82, of 5127 Cedar Hills Blvd., were found by police Sunday in pools of blood in separate parts of their home.
Police responded around 4:40 p.m. for a report of an assault at the residence and found Edward Friday on the living room floor and his wife on a bed unconscious. Police talked to Edward Friday, who reportedly said the couple agreed to go through with suicides, but his wife was unsuccessful in cutting her own throat, and he assisted. He then used a knife to cut his wrist and took an undetermined number of Oxycotin pills, police said.
Edward Friday was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Monday. Wilma Friday was flown to UPMC-Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, where a spokesperson said she was in critical condition.
A statement from police said the couple had no apparent health issues, and there were no reports of domestic discord. Police said they have not filed charges yet but are treating the investigation as attempted murder.
