PITTSBURGH (AP) – An attorney for the family of a teenager who was stabbed by a homeless man in a Western Pennsylvania Target store says the retailer failed to provide enough security to prevent her from being wounded.

The comments were made Wednesday during open statements in a lawsuit against the retailer. The trial is expected to last two weeks and is a combination of three lawsuits.

Authorities say Leon Walls was convicted in the 2013 stabbing rampage and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years behind bars.

The girl’s attorney, Lisa Circeo, says Target should have stopped Walls. But Target sued Walls and three men hailed as heroes for rescuing her, saying they created the situation by bringing a “street” dispute into the store.

Two of the three men have countersued Target.
