Food trucks driving to satisfy

The Greater Pittsburgh Food Truck Festival at The Meadows gave those who had a taste for something delicious a truckload of choices.
From falafel to the Sultan of Swat to ice cream and kettle corn, more than two dozen vendors serving from food trucks and tents had offerings to tempt any palate.
The Dickerson family of Canonsburg checked out the choices Saturday.
“We saw the food trucks were going to be here,” said Craig Dickerson. “We always see them on the travel channel, so we figured we’d give it a try.”
Dickerson’s wife, Taunya, and their son Logan, a seventh-grader at Canonsburg Middle School, each had a Sultan of Swat, a creation of The Meadows executive chef and his staff. The two declared the creation as being “really good.”
The Sultan of Swat is a corn dog on steroids, said Ari Sobel, director of food and beverage services at The Meadows. It features 4-ounce links of Italian sausage, kielbasa and all beef hot dog dipped in a batter that is not too thick to coat it before frying it, Sobel said.
“It is delicious,” he said.
Katlyn Dickerson, a 10th-grader at Canon-McMillan High School, enjoyed an Under Dog, another concoction from The Meadows culinary staff, that was a bacon-wrapped stadium dog topped with chili, cheese, onions and mustard along with Utz chips.
Serving as a side dish for the Dickersons was short rib poutine from Franktuary, also declared as being quite tasty.
Jennifer Sherry and her husband, Brendan Sherry, along with their children Leah, 5, and Megan, 2, went to the festival with family friend Nathaniel Borrelli of Bethel Park and his two daughters, one-year-old Stella Borrelli and two-month-old Emelene Borrelli.
Jennifer Sherry said her sister, Mandy Hutchison, wanted to go to the festival to celebrate her birthday.
“I like the idea of the food truck festival,” Jennifer Sherry said.
While the kids stuck with grilled cheese sandwiches from Oh My Grill, the adults tried food from several spots including everything from cheese steak sandwiches from Jersey Mike’s to falafel from PGH Halal Food to hot dogs at Hott Dawgz.
The festival continues from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.
