Meeting recap
• Date: May 19
• Action: At the request of the Planing Department, the board awarded a $1,122,597 contract to A. Folino Construction Inc. of Oakmont, Allegheny County, for paving a trail, parking lot, a road and two bridge decks around the county.
The project to be completed first will be the paving of Ballfield Road from the Henry covered bridge toward the observatory and upper parking lot in Mingo Creek County Park.
A nine-mile stretch of the Panhandle Trail between Burgettstown and McDonald, including the Midway and Primrose areas, is to be paved this summer, perhaps with intermittent closures, said Lisa Cessna, executive director of Washington County Planning Commission, which oversees county parks.
Also included on the list of projects are bridge decks on South Jefferson Avenue, Canonsburg, and Rankin Road, South Strabane Township.
The source of the money for the projects comes from gas and oil revenues from the area beneath the Panhandle Trail and Mingo Creek park and state taxpayers.
The Planning Department also will be seeking proposals from engineering firms to design and acquire permits to replace a bridge over Catfish Run near downtown Washington known as Chartiers Bridge No. 58; the Hess Bridge No. 30 over Chartiers Creek in Cecil Township and the rehabilitation of the Evans Bridge No. 40 over Ten Mile Creek in Amwell Township.
As expected, the commissioners approved the purchase of playground equipment from Jeffrey Associates of Indianola, Allegheny County, at a total cost of $111,904 to be paid from gas and oil funds. The equipment is destined for Cross Creek, Mingo Creek and Ten Mile Creek county parks.
• Travel: The board approved $720 for travel expenses for one employee to attend the National Association of Drug Court Professionals’ training conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 1-4, to be paid from the Act 198 Substance Abuse Fund.
• Announcement: All county offices will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.
• Next meeting: 10 a.m. Thursday, June 2, in the public meeting room of the Courthouse Square office building.
