Pageant now taking applications
WAYNESBURG – Before watching fireworks on one of America’s favorite holidays, several Waynesburg girls will take center stage for one of the borough’s favorite traditions – the Little Miss Firecracker Pageant.
The pageant, sponsored by Waynesburg Lions Club and Waynesburg Sewing Center, will start at 6 p.m. July 4 in front of the grandstand at the Greene County Fairgrounds during the club’s annual Fourth of July celebration.
Organizer Eleanor Chapman said the event goes back about 15 years, where girls ages 5 to 8 dress up in patriotic attire and be interviewed on stage. The winner of the noncompetitive pageant will be determined by a random drawing and will receive a crown, sash, trophy and bouquet.
“The girls just love it,” Chapman said. “We have about eight contestants each year and all of them will get a participation medal, a flower and a goodie bag.”
The reigning 2015 Little Miss Firecracker, Marissa Sue Tharp, will crown the new queen.
Applications are available by calling Chapman at 724-627-5284. Deadline is June 14. The contestants for 2016 will rehearse at 6 p.m. July 3 on the stage.
