Two Southeastern Greene school buses collide in Mapletown
MAPLETOWN – Two district students were flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries after two Southeastern Greene school buses collided Tuesday afternoon near Mapletown Junior-Senior High School.
Five students were injured in the “rear end” collision, state police said. None of the students suffered life-threatening injuries.
The crash occurred at 3:12 p.m. on Mapletown Road, a short distance from the high school. Police said a bus operated by Amy Lea Powell, 42, of Waynesburg struck the rear of a bus traveling in front of her operated by Margaret Kovalcheck, 59, of Dilliner. Both are employed by Zalar Busing Inc. of Waynesburg, which is under contract with the district.
About 30 junior-senior high school students were on each bus, Southeastern Greene business manager Pat Sweeney said at the scene. At the time, Sweeney said, he did not know the extent of the students’ injuries.
Fire companies from Greensboro, Bobtown and Carmichaels assisted at the scene. Southwest EMS also assisted passengers. No further information was available Tuesday night.
