Construction on the new outdoor amphitheater at Peterswood Park is nearing its mid-November completion date.
Peters Township will complete landscaping and paving in-house in advance of a ribbon cutting in the spring, Michele Harmel, parks and recreation director, said.
In May, the township awarded a $461,475 contract to Masco Construction Inc., which is based on Peters, to construct a pre-engineered building.
Original estimates for a new amphitheater, to replace the 30-year-old concrete structure at the park, were more than $800,000. The township, though, was unable to secure grant money from state gaming funds and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and so staff members developed a less-expensive alternative.
The 2016 municipal budget included an appropriation of $600,000 toward the project. Mark Zemaitis, township director of engineering, said at the May council meeting that the new building also should have a life span of about 30 years.
The amphitheater in the past has hosted a summer concert series, which had a limited run this year with a couple of shows in the township recreation center. A “Rock-off” featuring local bands was held during Peters Township Community Day during a few years in the past decade.
Also at Peterswood Park, construction on a replacement playground near Shelter 4 began in October. Sports and Recreation Associates of Apollo submitted the low bid of $162,500.
