CANONSBURG –
Officer Scott Leslie Bashioum, 52, was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at Canonsburg Hospital at 4:10 a.m. Thursday by Washington County Coroner Tim Warco. The wounded officer, who has been identified as James Saieva, was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and officials said he was in stable condition.

Police said the man suspected of shooting the officers, Michael Cwiklinski, 47, of Canonsburg, and his wife, Dalia Elhefny Sabae, were found dead inside the home after police made entry later Thursday morning. Warco ruled Cwiklinski died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound; Sabae of a homicide.
“He laid in wait for them,” said Capt. David Heckman, commanding officer for state police Troop B, which is handling the shooting investigation. “(Cwiklinski) fired on them as they arrived.”
Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said that Washington County 911 got a call at 3:13 a.m. from the duplex adjacent to 120 Woodcrest of a domestic dispute, and that a protection from abuse order was involved. When the officers arrived at 3:19 a.m., she said they were immediately fired upon and struck by the gunfire.
Canonsburg police Chief Alexander Coghill said that Cwiklinski is known to officers, but he had no details.

State Police Trooper Melinda Bonderanka briefs reporters about the shooting early today in Canonsburg in which one police officer was killed and another wounded.
Heckman said state police are still piecing together what happened Thursday morning. He said troopers were processing the scene and canvassing the area.
“They are right in the middle of it,” Heckman said. “We are still trying to pull a lot together.”
Heckman said that there was some concern of a possible booby trap. The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called to assist. Heckman declined to comment on what action the bomb squad took or what was found.
Woodcrest Drive was cordoned off most of the day Thursday with dozens of police officers gathered around a hulking SWAT vehicle positioned just outside the townhouse.

Cwiklinski was cited for harassment in connection with a dispute with his wife in June.
Cwiklinski was the subject of two PFA orders his wife had requested in Washington County court in the last year.
Dalia Sabae filed for the first in December 2015 after a Nov. 28 incident at Wal-Mart. She said he hit her in the face with a bag containing “heavy cans,” causing a closed-head injury with bruising to her face and broken blood vessels in her eye for which she went to a hospital.

Senior Judge William C. Reed later dismissed the PFA when Sabae failed to appear for a hearing. Cwiklinski was charged with simple assault and harassment, and pleaded guilty to harassment.
Sabae again asked for one Oct. 11, saying her husband was “destructive when he is under the influence” and got angry and destroyed her possessions, personal documents and household objects around the house. “The defendant left and as he was leaving he was saying that I and our baby that I am pregnant with have to die,” according to the petition.
Police were in multiple locations in Canonsburg, including Woodcrest and Hutchison Avenue, on Thursday morning and residents on Woodcrest were evacuated as police flooded the area.
Neighbor Jeff Ewig said his wife, Marcia, woke him up about 4:30 a.m. after seeing lots of police cars and flashing lights near their home at the corner of Woodcrest Drive and Fern Street.
“I took a look outside and jeez, I was shocked to see how many police cars there were,” he said. “This is such a quiet neighborhood.”
He described “police officers buckled behind” their cars, although there was not a lot of movement around the house.
He said his wife knew the fallen officer and described him as a “great guy.”

“I don’t know how to describe it. It’s such a shame,” Ewig said. “God bless these guys who are out there to protect us. I’m just surprised that it happened in a neighborhood like this.”
Elsewhere in the neighborhood, police officers carrying assault rifles were seen knocking on doors and talking to residents who were told to shelter in place, leaving the streets empty and eerily quiet. Officers with police dogs inspected several vacant homes in the neighborhood out of abundance of caution to check if the suspect was hiding in another residence. Police from Washington and Allegheny counties were involved in the search.
Canon-McMillan and Chartiers-Houston schools were closed Thursday because of the shootings.
