Stadium property annexed to city
A deal between municipalities that will simplify operations at Washington High School Stadium has been reached.
South Strabane Board of Supervisors agreed to release 9.41 acres of the home of the Little Prexies to the city Wednesday, and Washington mayor and council approved the transfer Thursday.
“It makes sense to convey this property to the city of Washington,” said Washington School Board President Jeffrey Fine.
A large portion – but not all – of stadium grounds is located in South Strabane Township. So, depending on where an incident took place requiring officers, either city or township police would respond.
Officials from the city, township and Washington School District agreed it was time to make a change.
The annexation of the property will not hurt the township financially, said Fine, because school property is tax-exempt. In addition, the township police force will no longer respond to calls there.
The school district agreed to pay as much as $5,000 for legal and engineering costs.
Widmer Engineering surveyed the site in July. A map showing the new property lines indicates Humbert Lane and sections of two paper streets will remain with the township.
Now that the municipalities have reached an agreement, the annexation will be filed with the county and the property transferred.
“It’s common sense that our stadium sits in the city,” Superintendent Dr. Roberta DiLorenzo told city council in February, when school officials began to make a push for the takeover. “All of our stadium.”
