O-R Weekend Recap: 5 things you need to know for Monday
It’s Monday and in case you might have missed some of the top local news stories that appeared on the Observer-Reporter’s website, we have compiled a quick list of five things you need to know for Monday!
The Canonsburg police officer killed Thursday answering a domestic call was ambushed with shots fired from a second-floor window as he approached a residence on Woodcrest Drive.
Officers Scott L. Bashoium and James Saieva were ambushed outside the house at 120 Woodcrest by Michael Cwiklinski, who was firing a high-powered rifle. The 52-year-old Bashioum died a short time later at Canonsburg Hospital. Saieva was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition. Cwiklinski, 47, and his 28-year-old wife, Dalia Sabae, who was three months pregnant, were later found dead on the second floor of the home.

In another follow-up story to the fatal Canonsburg police shooting, Cwiklinski’s car also had jugs filled with what appeared to be an accelerant, and there was reportedly a lit lantern inside the vehicle, said a source close to the investigation.
Neighbors in the area reported hearing rapid gunfire. The house was cleared using a robot provided by Allegheny County Bomb Squad. The robot entered the house and went up the steps, where it located two bodies later identified as 28-year-old Dalia Elhefny Sabae and Cwiklinski.
Sabae was from Egypt, police said. She and Cwiklinski reportedly met on a dating website, and he brought her to the United States, the source added. The two obtained a marriage license in Washington County in May 2015, and the source said she was pregnant when she was killed.

The shooting deaths of a Canonsburg woman, her unborn child and a local police officer at the hands of the woman’s husband is the latest local case that highlights the need for greater efforts aimed at preventing domestic violence and holding abusers accountable, said local experts.
“We need to start preventing it,” said Lisa Hannum, director of operations for Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania in Washington. “We need to start saying it’s unacceptable. Across the board.”
