WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) – A former Wheeling police officer has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student in the school where he worked.

Local news outlets report that 42-year-old Phillip Redford was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony sex abuse by a person in a position of trust. A criminal complaint says Redford had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old teen at The Linsly School, where he was head of security, from January to May.

Her father found out and hired an attorney, who contacted Redford in August, demanding that he leave his positions of authority and have no further contact with the teen. He resigned from the school and retired from the police department the next day.

Redford was arrested following a meeting between the father’s attorney and West Virginia State Police last month.

It’s not immediately clear whether Redford has an attorney.
