Garbage collection fees to increase in Waynesburg and Franklin Townships
WAYNESBURG – The monthly cost of residential garbage collection will increase slightly in the next few years under an apparent low bid presented Monday for waste collection services in Franklin Township and Waynesburg Borough.
As in past years, Franklin Township and Waynesburg Borough bid the contract jointly hoping to gain favorable fees for residents. Bids were opened Monday by the Franklin Township supervisors at their bimonthly meeting and reviewed by Waynesburg council, which met later that day.
Two bids were received: One from the current waste contractor, Advanced Disposal, and the other from Mountain State Waste. Advanced Disposal presented the apparent low bid for the five-year contract.
Under Advanced Disposal’s proposal, the currently monthly fee for curbside collection will increase from $11.98 to $12.47 next year. The fee will gradually increase to $13.77 in 2021.
The monthly fee for walk-up collection will increase from $16.98 to $18.71 next year and gradually increase to $20.65 in 2021; and the monthly fee for seniors, 65 and older, curbside collection will increase from $10.78 this year to $11.22 next year and gradually rise to $12.38 in 2021.
Both the township and borough appeared to be satisfied with the bids. Supervisor Reed Kiger said the roughly 50 cent increase in curbside collection next year is fairly minimal.
“Nobody likes to see things go up, but that isn’t bad considering the way things are going now,” he said.
The proposal from Mountain State called for a first-year increase for the curbside collection to $19 a month, he said. Borough manager Mike Simms also said the borough has received very few complaints about Advanced Disposal’s services.
Council voted Monday to award the contract to Advanced Disposal. The Franklin supervisors are expects to award the contract to the company at their next meeting Nov. 29.
