WAYNESBURG – Plans to replace the Sheetz store at Route 21 and Jefferson Road with a larger store, which will include an inside dining area, were granted conditional approval Tuesday by the Franklin Township supervisors.

The company plans to replace the existing store, which opened in December 1999, and will expand its operations onto the existing site of Waynesburg Plaza.

Work on the project will begin sometime after July with the demolition of the plaza, David Mastrostefano, engineer and project manager, told the supervisors. Tenants of the plaza have until then to find another location, he said.

The existing store, which contains about 4,000 square feet of space, will be replaced with a store 5,953 square feet in size. The new store will be constructed on the site of the Waynesburg Plaza. This will allow the company to keep the existing store open until the new store is completed, Mastrostefano said.

The new store will include space for inside dining with about 30 seats. Tables and seating also will be available outside. The restaurant will continue to offer a full menu. It also will sell beer.

The project also will include the construction of a car wash on the east side of the property.

Plans for the project had been reviewed by the township planning commission Nov. 21. The commission approved the project with conditions that were accepted by the supervisors in their approval Tuesday.

Among the conditions are a requirement that the company receives final approval from the state Department of Transportation for proposed highway entrances from Route 21 and Bill George Drive. The company also must obtain approval from the conservation district of its erosion and sedimentation control plan.

A second Sheetz store also is being planned for a site on Route 21 near Murtha Drive, about two miles east of the Jefferson Road store. The developer has already discussed the project with the township, but has not yet submitted plans for the township’s review.

Sheetz, based in Altoona, operates more than 500 stores in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina. It has one other store in Greene County on Route 88 at the Paisley intersection in Cumberland Township. The company earlier proposed expanding that store.
