South Strabane Township police have released surveillance photographs they recently obtained of a man who tried to rob a Racetrack Road gasoline station and convenience store last month.

The robber tried to hold up the BP, 505 Racetrack Road, about 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 22. The clerk told police he was working outside when he was approached by a man coming from the Chartiers Township side of Racetrack. He reportedly told the clerk to get back inside the store. Once inside, he reportedly ordered the clerk to open the cash register several times, but the clerk refused. The man then left the store, going in the direction of Interstate 79.

Township police Detective Ken Torboli said the would-be robber indicated he had a gun, but no weapon was seen by the clerk. The robber is white with short hair. He wore a gray, long-sleeved shirt, shorts and had a black and white bandana over his face. He also had a Doritos chip bag over his hand. The surveillance photos show he also had tattoos on his lower legs.

Torboli said a white, full-size sport utility vehicle was seen in the area at the time of the robbery. The vehicle has a white sticker in the top center of the rear window and is missing a hubcap on the rear passenger side. Torboli said police want to talk to the owner of the vehicle.

Township police and Washington police were able to determine that the BP robbery was not committed by the same person who robbed two convenience stores in the city recently.

The Kwik Fill, 705 E. Maiden St., was robbed Sept. 19 while the Uni-Mart, about four blocks away, was robbed in the early morning hours of Sept. 20. The two city robberies are believed to have been committed by the same person.

Anyone who recognizes the robber or vehicle is asked to call Torboli at 724-225-8111.
