Two charged in thefts from cars in Cumberland
CARMICHAELS – Cumberland Township police charged two people in connection with the rash of thefts from unlocked cars after investigators said someone witnessed one of the thefts in progress Monday afternoon and contacted authorities.
When officers arrived to Market Street about 4:20 p.m., they allegedly found Chip Riley going through the car as Nicole Jordan stood by.
Police Chief Craig Miller said they interviewed Riley and then went to Jordan’s apartment at 104 Cedarwood Drive in Cumberland Township, where they found on a table four sets of sunglasses that were reported stolen.
Police received a search warrant to go through the rest of the residence, Miller said, and officers found numerous other items that were reported stolen, including GPS units, hand tools, cellphones, loose change and a camera.
Miller said Riley and Jordan went to Circle K in Carmichaels earlier in the day and purchased cigarettes and soft drinks using a large amount of change.
At least seven thefts, all from unlocked cars, occurred late Sunday and early Monday on Market, Center, Maple streets, Ceylon Road and Hewitt Avenue in the township, Miller said. He expects that number to climb as they have found other items that hadn’t been reported stolen.
“As we’re locating and identifying some of these items, all of the thefts weren’t reported, so we’re expecting additional ones,” Miller said.
Riley, 28, of 3 Diaz Ave., Nemacolin, faces charges of theft from a motor vehicle, theft and receiving stolen property.
Police charged Jordan, 26, with receiving stolen property.
Anyone who believes items may have been stolen from their car are asked to call Cumberland Township police at 724-966-8296 to identify their possessions.
