The plan to close First Street and Cecil elementary schools in anticipation of opening the new Muse Elementary School in 2017 will be the subject of two upcoming public hearings. Both hearings, one for each school, will be held Oct. 20 in the Canon-McMillan High School auditorium at 7 p.m. with First Street Elementary’s closure scheduled first and Cecil immediately after.

The $31 million Muse Elementary School is expected to open in August 2017 for the 875 students moving into the building, according to district officials. The expected school population is 125 more students than the three present elementary schools combined.

“The hearings required by law are intended to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to provide input regarding proposed building closures and and that input will be recorded for public record,” said Superintendent Michael Daniels, “and following the hearings the the board of school directors will be asked to approve the closure of the schools. This vote will occur after a required wait time of at least three months.”
