ROGERSVILLE – Save-A-Horse Stable is throwing open its barn doors for anyone who wants to pet a pony.

The nonprofit that helps to rehabilitate and care for unwanted or ill horses is holding an open house Saturday to give the public an up-close look at the dozens of horses that roam the pastures of Darlene and Kevin Moore’s farm in Center Township.

Darlene Moore has brought her horses to numerous events in Greene and Washington counties, but this will be the first time she and her husband host large groups of people onto their 400-acre property.

“I want them to meet the horses, see how good they look and hear their stories,” Darlene Moore said. “I want people in the community to know what we do. It’s not a business. It’s an expense. I don’t want to get rid of them.”

The operation began as a riding stable on Darlene’s family farm 35 years ago, but she soon began taking in sick and unwanted horses from people and nursed them back to health. For three decades, Save-A-Horse Stable operated as a riding camp, but the Moores turned it into a nonprofit designed to save as many animals as possible.

The horses have been to various events around the community, so now she wants people to see the horses in their natural environment.

“They’re going to be running like they’re wild horses, even though they’re not,” she said. “They’re sweet and you can pet them.”

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 9 and younger. There will be tours, games, food and music during the open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the property located at 165 Lightner Run Road near Rogersville. Proceeds from the event will help the Moores purchase food and medicine for the nearly 60 horses on their farm.

“I’m proud of it. I’m proud of my horses and what we do,” Moore said. “But it’s stressful. We need funding for special medication for the older horses. Some of them are in their 20s and 30s and hey start having health problems. They need medication and special feed for the ones with their teeth going bad.”

As a non-profit, they’re now reliant on fundraisers and donations from the public and hope the open house will shed more light on what they do on a daily basis and how they need the community’s support to continue.

“I’m hoping it’s an eye-opener for people in the community,” Moore said.
