Local residents make their mark at Keystone livestock expo

The Keystone International Livestock Exposition, which bills itself as the largest livestock show in the eastern United States, wrapped up Sunday in Harrisburg with several local residents winning honors.

According to information compiled by the state Department of Agriculture press office, Allee Hoover, 9, of Washington, won in her age range for showmanship with her Suffolk breeding sheep and also showed the reserve champion Dorper ewe, a South African breed. She also won the junior division lead contest.

Chad Hoover of Washington showed the reserve champion Oxford ram and the champion ram, ewe and reserve champion ewe among Merinos.

Allison Litman of Washington exhibited the champion spotted gilt in the swine competition.

Mark Ryburn of the Ryburn Homestead, Washington, who owns draft horses, was named first among Pennsylvania exhibitors with his cart in an equine competition.

Madalyn Rank of Centerville exhibited the best bred and owned Shorthorn in the junior beef show with entry Sull Royal Rose.

This year’s event took place Sept. 30 through Sunday at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, Harrisburg. Among the sponsors are the Pennsylvania Beef Council, Equine Council, Pork Producers Council and several agriculture-related businesses.
