Ex-chair of Richmond Federal Reserve Bank dies

Thomas J. Mackell Jr., former chairman of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank and the executive director of Maritime Labor Alliance, died.

Mackell’s son, Sean, said by phone Tuesday his father died Sunday at a hospital near Manhasset in Long Island, N.Y., where he lived. He said his father, was who 74, had cancer.

Mackell served as chairman of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank from 2005 through 2008. He was appointed executive director of the Maritime Labor Alliance, a national organization of 110,000 maritime workers, last year. Mackell was also special adviser to the international president of the International Longshoremen’s Association.

Sean Mackell said his father doted on his 10 grandchildren, and tried to impress upon them the importance of standing up for working people.
