Inspector at Interstate 70 construction site hit by vehicle
State police said an inspector working Tuesday morning at the Interstate 70 construction site near the Murtland Avenue exit in South Strabane Township was injured when he was hit by a construction vehicle.
Donald Gwynn was working as a consultant for McTish Kunkel and Associates when he was struck by a tractor-trailer and dragged several feet in the westbound lanes of the highway about 8 a.m. The westbound lanes are under construction and closed to regular traffic.
A truck hauling a lowboy trailer loaded with concrete barriers caught the pants on his upper leg, said Scott Faieta, state Department of Transportation assistant construction manager. Gwynn fell backward and struck his head on the concrete roadway. South Strabane firefighters set up a landing zone in the parking lot of Washington Hospital. He was taken by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital, but Faieta said he was conscious and talking.
Golden Triangle Construction of Imperial is the general contractor on the $51.2 million project to renovate the Murtland Avenue interchange on I-70. Police identified the driver as Gary Hooks. He works for a subcontractor on the project, Strongtown B&K.
Faieta said Golden Triangle will conduct an investigation into the incident. PennDOT also will do a on-site assessment.
State police said they are continuing their investigation into the crash.
