CHARLEROI – A Monessen man charged with attempted homicide in connection with a shooting last month in Charleroi waived his case Thursday to Washington County Court.

Emmanuel “Mayo Stacks” Diaz, 22, formerly of The Bronx, New York, also waived his right to an attorney when he appeared before District Judge Larry Hopkins, signing forms that canceled his preliminary hearing on charges he shot two people Sept. 25 in the 1000 block of Fallowfield Avenue.

“The victims were present with their families ready to testify,” said Dennis Paluso, first assistant district attorney in Washington County.

Diaz is accused of shooting Alec Long, 21, of Charleroi, once in the head and an unnamed female, 17, in the chin about 10:25 p.m. after they had an earlier argument with him over marijuana in Monessen. Both victims are recovering from their injuries, Charleroi Regional police said.

Police used video surveillance to identify Diaz as the suspect the night of the shooting, and officers arrested him within hours without incident at his stepparents’ home at 337 Short St.

Police said officers seized more than seven bricks of heroin, a small bag of marijuana and $245 from Diaz, with most of the drugs being found behind a box of rat poison tucked in the basement rafters. Some of the heroin stamp bags were marked Dead Fish in blue lettering.

Diaz is also charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and possession with intent to deliver heroin.

He was returned Thursday to Washington County jail, where he has been held on $300,000 bond.
