The state System of Higher Education and Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties agreed not to make public statements on the status of negotiations.

A statement released Saturday said the news embargo is intended “to help minimize distractions.”

Talks between the state and the union representing professors at 14 state-owned universities, including California University of Pennsylvania, began Friday in an effort to avoid a strike next week.

Faculty have been working under an expired contract since June 30.
