Blaze damages city houses
Three structures were damaged in a Sunday morning fire in the 600 block of Allison Avenue, Washington.
The call to emergency responders came in around 7 a.m. Flames originated in the apartment complex at 615 Allison Ave., which sustained severe damage, said Washington Fire Capt. Gerald Coleman.
“It appeared to us it had been burning for quite some time prior to anyone seeing it,” said Coleman, who said the fire may have started on the front porch. “Residents were alerted by smoke detectors and woke up to see smoke coming in the front door.”
No injuries were reported.
Coleman said the structure to the right, 625 Allison Ave., sustained minor heat damage, and the structure to the left, 605 Allison Ave., sustained moderate-to-severe damage. That structure was also on fire when emergency responders arrived.
Crews worked until after 2 p.m. to fully extinguish hot spots.
Flames tore through the entire front of 615 Allison Ave., leaving it uninhabitable.
Coleman said the Red Cross is assisting several people, but he did not know exactly how many were affected.
A state police fire marshal is investigating. Fire crews from South Strabane, North Strabane, Canton and Peters townships assisted.
“All crews worked very well together,” Coleman said. “Having three structures endangered, we were able to minimize damage to the two others.”
