Police: Man jumps into river after crash; body recovered
TARENTUM (AP) – Authorities in Western Pennsylvania say a body was recovered after a man jumped into a Pittsburgh-area river following a police chase and a crash.
Police in Allegheny County say a driver nearly struck a pedestrian and sideswiped several parked cars in Tarentum, then crashed his car at the base of the Tarentum bridge.
Sgt. Ryan Hanford told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that a resident reported that the driver had asked for assistance before running to the Allegheny River and jumping in.
He said the man was seen clinging to the first cement pier, but when police flashlights from shore landed on him, he swam further into the river, began struggling and then disappeared.
The body was recovered at about 11 a.m. Sunday. His name hasn’t been released.
