2000 Turkeys underway
With a little more than five weeks remaining until Thanksgiving, the 2000 Turkeys campaign is in full swing.
For more than three decades, the 2000 Turkeys campaign has worked to provide Thanksgiving meals to low-income Washington County residents who otherwise might not be able to enjoy a turkey dinner.
Each $20 donation provides a Thanksgiving dinner for a family of four. More than 50 percent of recipients are children and senior citizens, according to Greater Washington County Food Bank director Connie Burd.
2000 Turkeys, co-sponsored by the Observer-Reporter and WJPA Radio (which generously donates studio air time each Friday morning to promote the campaign and the individuals, organizations and businesses who donate), is the largest single fundraiser on behalf of the food bank and its neighboring pantries.
One hundred percent of donations goes toward providing Thanksgiving dinners for families.
The 2000 Turkeys board – WJPA disc jockey Pete Povich, Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome, Pennsylvania Fire Commissioner Tim Solobay, Matt Pitzarella, director of corporate communications and public affairs for Range Resources, Grace Hopwood, one of the 2000 Turkeys founders, and the O-R’s Karen Mansfield – are thankful for the community’s efforts to make sure their neighbors are able to enjoy a holiday meal, and strive to carry on the good work started by Hopwood and the organization’s other founders, the late Byron Smialek and Wayne Armstrong.
If you would like to donate to the 2000 Turkeys campaign, please mail your tax-deductible check donation, payable to “2000 Turkeys,” to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, PA 15301. Or, drop off your donation at the O-R office, 122 South Main St., in Washington, or at WJPA Radio, 98 South Main St. (next door to the O-R).
And, if you have photos from a 2000 Turkeys fundraiser event you are doing as an individual, organization or business, please send to Instagram at #Washington2000turkeys.
Each year, 2000 Turkeys aims to raise $100,000. So far, the campaign has raised $5,136.
