Two arrested after leaving a stolen car, taking another in Amwell
Two people were arraigned Tuesday on charges including theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for allegedly leaving behind a car stolen in North Carolina and then stealing another car from the parking lot of an Amwell Township convenience store earlier this month.
Brett Tyler Myers, 33, of Ocala, Fla., and Harlie Nicole Wells, 22, of Kenly, N.C., were returned to Washington County from Steubenville, Ohio, where they were apprehended several hours after the car was stolen.
State police were called Oct. 11 to the Lone Pine One Stop, 1748 Amity Ridge Road (Route 19), for a report of a stolen car. A Washington man told police he had left his 2015 Chevrolet Cruze unlocked with the engine running and gone into the store for a few minutes. When he came out, the car was gone. He spotted it going down the driveway to Amity Ridge and making a right turn.
After checking store surveillance, a man later identified as Myers is seen getting into the car and driving around the back and picking up a woman, identified as Wells. A witness told police he had given the two a ride to the store after they told him they had run out of gasoline. The vehicle that Myers and Wells had been in had been towed to the store. Police checked and learned the 2003 Audi had been reported stolen in Selma, N.C., the same way the Chevrolet Cruze had been stolen.
The trooper talked with an OnStar operator, who provided turn by turn information on the whereabouts of the Chevrolet Cruze. A bulletin with the description of Myers and Wells was broadcast. A short time later, police in Steubenville notified state police they had found the car and had the two suspects in custody.
Both were arraigned before District Judge Ethan Ward on charges of theft, receiving stolen property, conspiracy and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Myers is also charged with driving under suspension and not having a license. They are each in Washington County Jail on $25,000 bond and are scheduled for a Nov. 8 preliminary hearing before Ward.
Police said Myers is also wanted on warrants in Florida.
