A little more than a month remains until Thanksgiving Day. While many people are preparing to give thanks for the blessings in their lives, others are feeling the pain of poverty and misfortune.

The annual 2000 Turkeys campaign is in full swing, raising funds for Washington County families who find themselves underemployed or unemployed, along with senior citizens and children, so that they can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

Ed and Edith Dubilak of Richeyville are among the nearly 6,700 families for whom 2000 Turkeys aims to provide a Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Dubilak, 46, is a U.S. Army veteran and father of six who is unable to work because of a physical disability.

“It’s tough being on a fixed income. 2000 Turkeys really helps,” said Dubilak. “I’m grateful for everything we have, and grateful for everyone who donates to 2000 Turkeys. I appreciate all their efforts, and it’s great to see the communities come together this time of year to help out others.”

So far, thanks to the generosity of Washington County individuals, businesses and organizations, 2000 Turkeys has raised $8,846. So, the campaign is only $91,154 short of its goal, which is to raise $100,000 to help more than 19,000 food-insecure Washington County residents.

Every penny from the 2000 Turkeys campaign goes toward making sure we have enough dinners for those families in need.
