WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg University recently amped up its information technology department by installing a new data center as part of the school’s $23 million renovation of the Paul R. Stewart Science Hall.

The data center will host most of the university’s technology service and infrastructure on the main campus.

“This provides the backbone for all of the technology services that we have,” said William Dumire, Waynesburg University’s vice president for information technology and chief information officer. “It’s an indirect value for the students’ education, because with it comes the ability to bring in new applications.”

Dumire said that when he came into his position three years ago, he was asked to take a look at the university’s information technology infrastructure to see what needed to be upgraded.

“One of the things we identified is that we’ve not really had an appropriate data center at the institution,” he said.

The data center will also support a new wireless system throughout the campus and will simplify making repairs, launching new programs and installing new equipment. Dumire did not want to divulge all of the details for security purposes, but he said the center “provides all of the essential services that the university uses on a daily basis.”

“The data center allows Waynesburg University to carry out all daily operational and educational activities that rely heavily on the various technological systems used throughout the university,” he said.
