Pittsburgh has good reason for premature Christmas decor
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Folks are used to retailers putting up Christmas decorations before Halloween, but why is it happening on downtown Pittsburgh streets?
Mayor Bill Peduto says there’s a logical explanation that city crews are already hanging green wreaths with red bows on some light poles.
It’s because the wreaths will have electric lights and, because that’s never been done before, its taking workers longer to wire the outlets needed to power them.
Peduto says the city wants to ensure the decorations are up in time for Light Up Night, the annual kickoff to the holiday shopping season on Nov. 18.
The city isn’t paying for the extra-early decorations. The Colcom Foundation gave the city $80,000 for lighted wreaths on Fifth and Penn avenues and Grant Street.
