A district judge Thursday held attempted homicide and other charges against a Donora man in connection with a woman’s alleged Aug. 17 beating with a chest freezer and dehumidifier at a house in Charleroi.

Along with attempted homicide, Terry Lee Newton Jr., 27, of Donora, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and flight in connection with an alleged attack police said left 24-year-old Raven Randall unconscious with injuries including a punctured liver.

Patrolman Michael Leasure of Charleroi Regional police testified at a hearing before District Judge Larry Hopkins he was dispatched to 1022 Fallowfield Avenue about 2:51 a.m.

When he arrived, he said Krystal Randall, the victim’s sister, was outside screaming, “He’s killing her inside!”

Newton allegedly fled the house, running from the back porch and leading Leasure on a foot chase before he was apprehended on the 1000 block of Railroad Way.

Leasure and Lt. Mark Yates, who also responded to the call, said they found the victim inside, lying face down, bleeding and unresponsive with shallow breathing.

Leasure said Randall is 5 feet, 2 inches and 124 pounds; Newton, 6 feet, 4 inches and 305 pounds.

Assistant District Attorney Kristin Clingerman pointed out they and the victim’s sister were the only adults at the house.

The sisters share the house and have one young child each who also live there, according to testimony.

Krystal Randall allegedly told police Newton picked up the freezer and struck Raven Randall with it after she refused to give him a cigarette, according to documents filed in the case.

Photographs taken at the scene and the hospital included pictures of Raven Randall’s injuries were also presented at the hearing.

She was lifelighted to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. After two days, she was transferred to UPMC-Presbyterian, also in the city, where she stayed at least one day.

According to court records, Newton is held at Washington County jail and unable to make bond, which Hopkins left at $1 million.
