A woman was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital after being pulled from her burning car following an early-morning crash in Smith Township.

State police said a car operated by 29-year-old Kasey Ilene Evans of Weirton, W.Va., was traveling west on U.S. Route 22 near Creek Road shortly before 2 a.m. when she traveled off the westbound lanes and hit an unoccupied abandoned vehicle on the shoulder. The abandoned vehicle overturned and caught fire. Police said Evans’ vehicle, which sustained major front-end damage, also caught fire. A passing motorist stopped and pulled Evans from her car. She was treated by EMS and flown to Allegheny General Hospital with what police called moderate, nonlife-threatening injuries. Her condition was not available Thursday afternoon.

Police said Evans will be charged with driving under the influence.

Slovan Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the vehicle fires.
