Homicide investigation continues
State police said Tuesday they are continuing to investigate the shooting death of a Canton Township man.
Scott D. Taneyhill, 57, was found just after 6 a.m. Monday outside a basement door at his home at 65 Skylark Drive. Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said Taneyhill was shot multiple times and ruled the death a homicide.
A state police fire marshal also is investigating a small fire that apparently was set in the basement, near the door where Taneyhill’s body was found. Chuck LaBella, assistant Canton fire chief, said the fire nearly burned itself out before firefighters arrived, but they cleared smoke from the residence so police could conduct an investigation.
Neighbors in the rear reported hearing gunshots and saw smoke coming from the house, which is on a private lane off Malone Ridge Road.
Taneyhill’s daughter and her boyfriend were sleeping in the house at the time of the shooting, police said. His wife and granddaughter had left the residence about 30 minutes before he was shot.
Police said Monday they had no suspects but believed residents of the area had no need to be concerned.
